Pinag-aaralan sa papel na ito ang buhay at produksiyong intelektuwal ni Ernesto A. Constantino (1930–2016). Sa pamamagitan ng isang intelektuwal na talambuhay, ipinapakahulugan at ipinopook ang mga ideya ni Constantino sa mas malawak na kasaysayan ng kaniyang lipunang ginagalawan. Ipinapakita Ipinakikita ng papel na ito ang katayuan ni Constantino bilang isang haligi ng lingguwistika at pagpaplanong pangwika sa Pilipinas. Lubusang naging aktibo si Constantino sa pakikibahagi sa dalawang kumbensiyong konstitusyonal (1971–-1972 at 1986), kung saanna isa sa mahahalagang isyung pinagtalunan ang probisyon sa wikang pambansa. Isang lingguwista at tunay na tagapagtaguyod ng pambansang pagkakaisa at pagkakakilanlan, naghandog si Constantino ng solusyon sa matatawag na “rehiyonalismong pangwika” sa pamamagitan ng universal approach sa pagbubuo ng wikang pambansang ngayo’y kinikilala bilang Filipino. Nahahati ang papel na ito sa apat na sustantibong seksiyon: (1) talambuhay ni Constantino, (2) si Constantino bilang isang lingguwista, (3) si Constantino at pagpaplanong pangwika, at (4) si Constantino bilang poklorista. Sa huli, binibigyang -diin ang hindi matatawarang kontribusyon ni Constantino hindi lamang sa kaniyang larangan, kundi sa lipunang Pilipino sa pangkalahatan. Sa pamamagitan ng kaniyang intelektuwal na talambuhay, ipinapakita ipinakiakita na si Constantino ay hindi pasibo kundi isang aktibong ahente ng pagbabagong panlipunan. This paper studies the intellectual life and production of Ernesto A. Constantino (1930–-2016). Through an intellectual biography, Constantino’s ideas are interpreted and contextualized in the bigger history of his society. This paper shows the status of Constantino as a pillar of linguistics and language planning in the Philippines. Constantino became very active in participating in two constitutional conventions (1971–-1972 and 1986), where one of the most important issues tackled was the provision of national language. A linguist and a true advocate of national unity and identity, Constantino offered a solution to what can be called “language regionalism” through the universal approach in developing the national language now called Filipino. This paper is divided into four substantive sections: (1) biography of Constantino, (2) Constantino as a linguist, (3) Constantino and language planning, and (4) Constantino as a folklorist. In the end, the paper emphasizes the significant contributions of Constantino not only to his field but also to the Filipino society in general. Through his intellectual biography, Constantino is viewed as an active agent of social change.
