The Andrew Gonzalez Philippine Citation Index (AGPCI) is a national journal indexing and citation system established to enhance the visibility, accessibility, and impact of scholarly journals published in the Philippines. Named in honor of Br. Andrew Gonzalez FSC, a Filipino intellectual and leading advocate for the country’s first research-oriented universities, AGPCI advances his legacy by cultivating a research culture that is both rooted in national contexts and aligned with global standards.
Founded by a team of De La Salle University faculty researchers: Dr. Jose Isagani Janairo, Dr. Charibeth Cheng, Dr. Nelson Arboleda, Jr., and Dr. Feorillo Demeterio III, AGPCI responds to the long-standing need for a credible and locally anchored quality assurance and citation system for Philippine academic journals. With more than 500 journals published nationwide, the absence of a unified evaluation and indexing framework has historically limited their visibility, quality, and international recognition.
Taking inspiration from the creation of the Thai Journal Citation Index in 2001, which later led to the establishment of the ASEAN Citation Index in 2011, the team recognized the need for a Philippine Citation Index (PCI). While there were earlier attempts to establish such a system, sustaining those projects proved challenging. AGPCI was established to bridge this gap and provide a sustainable, locally grounded mechanism to enhance journal quality and scholarly impact.
Recognizing this need, AGPCI collects bibliographic information and tracks citations of Philippine journals to serve as a national repository and a tool for assessing scholarly quality. Beyond indexing and citation tracking, AGPCI provides guidance, training, and editorial support to help journals improve their processes, strengthen scholarly rigor, and align with international best practices.
Through these initiatives, AGPCI strengthens the integrity, visibility, and global competitiveness of Philippine research. By supporting journals in achieving higher standards and enhancing their discoverability, AGPCI champions a Philippine research ecosystem that is both globally recognized and locally grounded, setting new standards of rigor and credibility in line with the visionary legacy of Br. Andrew Gonzalez FSC.
