Abstract

Indigenous Peoples are considered important in the Philippines because through them, we can try to identify who we are as Filipinos and where we came from. The focus of this study was to examine the cultural consciousness of the Alangan Mangyans of Mindoro and The Ibanags of Isabela in relation to their folk culture. This is an Ethnographic research aimed to construct middle-level understandings and views directly from data analysis, participatory observations, focus group discussion, and deconstructions among the two cultures. The paper has three objectives: 1) to expose the folk cultures of the Ibanags and Mangyangs based on their lived experiences, 2) to extract learnings, themes and values from this study, and 3) to understand the implications of these exposition to their lives as Indigenous people. The findings revealed that the Ibanags and Mangyans culture elicit deeper commitment to their cultures, love among their families, and stewardship of God’s creation. The values/themes learned from their culture evoked and unraveled the commitment of each family member/clan to be closer and to value one another’s presence as part of a community. As a conclusion, the study, through their folk culture, can enumerate reasons and discoveries why these indigenous people should continue to appreciate their Folk cultures especially their implications to the enhancement of their community life and values. As Culture through their Folk Literature becomes integral in their existence, new relationships are born and mutual sharing of love, life, pains, and faith takes place. The Folk Literature of the Ibanags and Mangyangs must take shape in every celebration of the community.
