May tatlong bahagi ang pag-aaral na ito. Una, sinikap na bigyang pansin ang mga naunang pag-aaral sa kasaysayan ng Simbahang Katoliko sa Pilipinas. Tinalakay ang kanilang mga pangunahing punto at paglalarawan sa naging daloy ng kasaysayan ng pagpapakalat ng pananampalatayang Katoliko sa Pilipinas. Ikalawa, binigyang paliwanag ang “Pantayong Pananaw” bíilang siyang magiging lente sa pag-aaral ng kasaysayang tinuran at kung paano ring magiging pamamaraan ito sa pagtugon sa suliraning naging epekto ng mga naunang pag-aaral. Ikatlo, sinikap na bumuo ng isang panibagong peryodisasyon ng kasaysayan ng Simbahang Katoliko na hindi naka-sentro sa mismong kilos/mga kilusan sa loob mismo ng Simbahan kundi sa mga kilos ng bayan mula sa kanilang pananampalataya sa Anito hanggang sa kanilang pagbubuo ng sariling mitolohiya kung saan nag-uugnay ang sinaunang pananampalatayang ito sa tinanggap na pananampalatayang Kristiyano Katoliko. The study consists of three parts. First, attention was given to the previous studies on the history of the Catholic Church in the Philippines. The main points of these works were discussed and their descriptions on how the Catholic Faith spread in the Philippines. Second, an explanation of “Pantayong Pananaw” was given in order to provide a way of looking into the problems coming from the mentioned surveys. Third, a new periodization of the History of the Philippine Catholic Church is proposed focusing not on the movement/s within the Church itself but on the movements of the people from their old beliefs in the Anito until the construction of a mythology which connects the old faith and the Christian Catholic faith.
