This article aims to provide a deeper understanding of the identity and history of siday or Waray poems of Samarnons and Leytenhons. It also deals with issues related to siday and the situation of Waray poetry and siday at present. The documents recorded by the Jesuit priest, Father Ignacio Franciso Alzina, which were written on his book entitled Historia de las Islas Indios de Bisayas…1668, has been a solid foundation for the study of Lineyte-Samarnon or Waray literature. He gave descriptions on the way of living, customs, traits, and traditions of the people of the islands of Samar and Leyte. Among the important observations he documented was their literature, specifically their poetry or poems. An important issue is also discussed in this paper regarding the use of the word "Waray" as a term used to identify the people, language, and literature of Samareños and Leyteños. Some experts or researchers in literature and language of Eastern Visayas claim that the true and accepted term is "Lineyte-Samarnon" because the word "Waray" is a negative connotation given to them. The article summarizes the key stages of the development of Waray literature from the early part of the nineteenth century or from the founding of Sanghiran San Binisaya (Academy of Visayan Language) until the fifties (the golden period of Waray literature), and its revival through the radio and of the activities held related to the development and the importance given to it at present.
