Abstract

Both home and school are spaces that nourish discourses about identity and gender. In spaces like these, the circulation of children`s literature as a pedagogical material that teaches about one`s individuality is possible. The parents or teachers who read these types of materials to their children are helping to hone the sensibilities of their kids in regards to knowing the ideas about sex, gender, and sexuality. Using the theories from the field of Queer Theory, Childhood studiesStudies, and Critical Pedagogy this paper will closely read the two children`s literature on both visual and narrative layers and then will link these critical readings to the discussion of the pedagogical role of children`s literature in teaching gender and sexuality. Through the two texts “Ang Tatay ni Klara At at Nanay ni Erwin” and “Ang Ikaklit Sa Aming Hardin,”, this paper was able to discuss three major ideas in teaching children`s literature and its genre, first on the visual level the paper discusses the role of characterization and illustration in relation to gender expression and identity. Second, the concept and narrative of "family" from the text and how it affects the sign system of sex and gender. Lastly, the pedagogical function of the two children`s literature and its connection to the sexual framework from heterosexual/homophobic framework to queer literacy framework. This paper aims to open up discussion and encourages others to continue to study the issues surrounding children`s literature and its connection to queer theory and literacy.
