Abstract

As a predominantly Catholic country, the majority of Filipinos choose not to spend their summer on a vacation, and instead, they use this season to solemnly celebrate the Holy Week – —a time wherein Catholics around the world remember the sacrifices of Jesus Christ on the cross until He rose from the dead. This Catholic celebration is strongly felt in the Philippines. Some notable activities during Holy Week include the reading of Pasyon— – a Philippine epic narrative of the life of Jesus Christ; Visita Iglesia; and procession. Unlike parades, the procession held during Holy Week is sacred, as it highlights various replicas or images of the saints that reflect the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In Makati City, the procession happens every Holy Wednesday and Good Friday. During those days, some of the busiest people are the cCamareros as they owned the sculptures gracing the said processions. The purpose of this study is to determine the existing language register used by the camarero when communicating with other camareros. This paper will cover the corpus used by camareros on their various tasks, such as negotiating or selling replicas, buying images, and most especially when preparing the figures before joining the Holy Week procession.
